Generally stated my research areas are the sociology of punishment, social theory, and criminal and juvenile justice. I am interested particularly in: problems of bureaucracy, characteristics of institutional change and social reform, the relationship of the state to for profit and non profit providers of punishment, and the potential of contemporary punishment practices to reflect or influence fundamental features of late or ‘post’ modernity. My doctoral research into the dynamics of privatisation and reform in juvenile justice connects with my interest in theorising the criminal justice process as a system, examining ways that the various agencies, policies, populations, legal frameworks, and logics that make up a criminal justice process might be understood to operate as a more or less coherent system or institution.
