    John Hagan, B.A. (Illinois) 1968, M.A. (Alberta) 1971, Ph.D. (Sociology)(Alberta) 1974, is University Professor and Professor of Sociology and Law. Professor Hagan taught previously at Indiana University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the Editor of the Annual Review of Sociology, the Criminology Editor of the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, and a member of The National Academy of Sciences Panel on School Violence. Professor Hagan's principal research and teaching interests encompass Law and Society and Criminology. His newest book, Northern Passage: American Vietnam War Resisters in Canada, was published by Harvard University Press in Spring, 2001. His other recent books are Crime and Inequality (Stanford University Press, 1995), Gender in Practice: a Study of Lawyers' Lives (Oxford University Press, 1995), and Mean Streets: Youth Crime and Homelessness (Cambridge University Press, 1997). In 1998 Mean Streets received the C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems and the Michael J. Hindelang Award from the American Society of Criminology. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1988 and President of the American Society of Criminology in 1991. Professor Hagan was a Senior Killam Research Fellow for 1991-1993, a U.S. German Marshall Fund Fellow for 1996-1997, and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow for 1997-1998. He received the 1997 American Society of Criminology Edwin H. Sutherland Award for distinguished contributions to North American criminology. John Hagan is presently on leave as the John D. MacArthur Visiting Professor of Sociology and Law at Northwestern University and Research Fellow at the American Bar Foundation
